Unknown to Rodney, JJLACA was an off-duty police officer. He had the opportunity to make overtime pay working to find child abusers by surfing the web. Sheldon’s specialty was going to chat rooms looking for victims. He hoped to gain a boy’s confidence and collect evidence against active pedophiles. Eventually he would try to arrange a meeting.

If he was able to obtain the parents’ cooperation, the victim could usually be persuaded to give names and addresses. A search of the boy’s computer or any that he regularly used would likely yield further evidence against the known perpetrators and perhaps others. One lead usually turned up others, like the branches of a tree.

Sheldon made chat dates with Rodney and they continued their conversation. They exchanged photographs and personal information. The officer always gave as much of the truth as he could.

Eventually, the kid asked Sheldon if he would like a picture of himself in the nude. He saw this as a sign that he was getting close to his goal, but if he declined he risked losing the opportunity. Of course, he complimented the youngster on his body. He would send the boy one of himself if he had one. Perhaps he could get one taken sometime soon.

Rodney sometimes complained about the degree of reciprocation he received from the men he was involved with. The officer tried to draw the boy out on this subject, did the lad feel he was being used.

As soon as Sheldon walked into the record store at the Big D Westside Mall he was surrounded by three FBI agents in plain clothes and arrested. It seems that there never was any boy. They didn’t think it was funny when Sheldon laughed and said that he was a city police officer. They didn’t believe him either.

After they got him to an interrogation room at the Federal Building and established that he really was an officer of the law, they still didn’t believe that he wasn’t trying to have sex with an underage boy. He was grilled for hours. They were annoyed at the prospect of having spent time and effort to catch a pedophile and might not have anything to show for it.

“You thought you were talking to a boy.” “You discussed doing specific sex acts with this boy.” “You expected that he would be willing to do those sex acts with you.” “You planned to bring the boy to your apartment and perform those acts.” “Didn’t you.”

Wasn’t it the usual practice in his internet crimes unit to pretend to be a youth, as they had done? Wasn’t it true that he wasn’t actually assigned to that department? Weren’t many of the men caught in internet stings, professionals of all sorts including doctors, lawyers and ministers? Hadn’t some police officers been convicted of using their positions to sexually abuse a youngster?

In the end they had to admit that they didn’t have enough evidence to get a conviction. From then on, however, Sheldon looked for extra duty at road construction sites and avoided anything having to do with computers or kids. And he got quite a razing from his fellow officers.
